During his life, Abraham learns at the Battle of New Orleans that the mettle of a man is what he does, not the color of his skin; fights against a slave system on his tobacco plantation; confronts dangers traveling west; and is shocked as a nation is ripped apart by civil war. Intertwined in his life is the ugliness of slavery. Abraham tackles many dangers--tornadoes, wild fires, cutthroats, and Hooker, the slaver--that cross his path.
Whetting his appetite for new adventures is Big Jen, a frontiersman, scout for General Andrew Jackson, the first white man to live in southwest Missouri, and the spinner of endless tales about the prairie lands of the Six Bulls where the grass is a high as a horse's eye and the water run pure and sweet.
